Because I read the book, I know what is coming in the show Sharp Objects and there are a couple particular things that make me cringe. They haven’t happened yet on the show so I keep cringing, thinking about them as I await their occurrence.
While no women were nominated by the Directors Guild for Feature or First-Time categories, there are 7 women nominated in the other categories, including: Outstanding Directorial Achievement in A Dramatic Series, Comedy Series, Variety/Talk/News/Sports - Specials, and Documentary.
Also: Helen Keller was friends with Alexander Graham Bell, who espoused several popular and relatively harmful theories about deaf people at the time (oralism and eugenics). It was a pretty common thought to consider disabled people as “people to be fixed”, shared by many popular theorists and philosophers of the day, and it’s hard not to think that this didn’t have an effect on how Helen Keller perceived herself and her disability. This is also a way of thinking that continues today. People with disabilities are expected to accommodate to the world, the world is not expected to accommodate to people with disabilities.
